My Cougar Doesn't Want to Marry Me!

I'm 20 and my partner is 34.   Recently she said she wants to get married at some point.   She is always evasive or changes the subject when I bring up specifically her marrying me, as opposed to just generally wanting to get married. This makes me think that she is just having fun with me and doesn't plan to actually marry me at some future time. 

She has said that she won't like me a bit more for trying to act older but I'm worried she needs someone who's not a kid to her and will ultimately go for someone more her peer.

I'm sorry but I have to chuckle because it in the past it was generally women wondering if they were being used, but obviously the tide is turning!

In a  2009 study by Cougared.com,  only 4% of Cougars said they preferred to date Cubs 20-23.  Older women know men in their early 20s are still sowing their wild oats, so they rarely consider them "marriage material".

The good news is that she is at least willing to date you - the majority of older women wouldn't even give you a chance.  She's right - acting older is not going to help because you're not being yourself.  Only a year ago you were still in your teens, so there is no way you're going to be "mature".

All you can do is treat her well and show her you're willing to grow and become the type of man that any woman would be proud to date.  The rest is up to her!

Cougar or Sugar Mama?

What is the difference between a Cougar and a Sugar Mama?  Blake


Hi Blake,

This is a great question because many people often confuse the two.

A Sugar Mama  is a woman of any age who provides financial and material "assistance" to men, usually younger.  She may or may not be a Cougar (over 40).

On the other hand, a Cougar may also be a Sugar Mama, but not usually.  She's generally not looking to provide for the Cub but rather either for a sexual fling or a relationship with a man at least 10 years her junior.

Is She a Cougar?

I'm 23 years and there is a 40ish, extremely hot lady at the gym who dresses to kill and seduce.  She does wear a ring or should I say more than one.  How can I find out if she is a Cougar?  Sean

Hi Sean,

The fact that she dresses to "kill and seduce" as you say (although, shouldn't it be the other way around), could mean one of two things:  1)  She is indeed a Cougar who is on the prowl and wants to attract as much attention as possible or 2) She's in a relationship or married and not getting enough attention, so she uses her clothes to make her feel wanted and attractive, but she has no intentions of going any further.

As usual, the only way to know if she's available is to talk to her. When people are available, they're more willing to socialize at the gym, so strike up a conversation.

My Thoughts on the Demi/Ashton divorce

I know many people are going to say the marriage between Ashton and Demi didn't work out because of their 15 year age difference but I disagree.  It ended due to infidelity.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore have been all over the news lately because of Ashton's rumored infidelity.  Though a split was considered inevitable, Demi was recently spotted on the red carpet still wearing her wedding ring.  Trouble in Cougar Paradise?

It's not an uncommon problem for Cougars...if you want to keep a 'Cub', you should know the possible pitfalls.  Here are some 'musts to avoid' that can help both you and Demi when dealing with a younger man:

That “know-it-all” attitude:  Just because you’re older, doesn’t mean you know everything.  He’ll know a few things you might not.  You’ll come across as condescending, and that’s never an attractive quality.  Don’t give him advice unless he asks for it, otherwise you will become his mother instead of his lover. 

The “Sugar Mama” trap:  Just because you may make or have more money than him, it doesn’t mean you always have to pay.  He’s still a man, and men instinctually want to provide – it makes them feel good, it makes them feel like men.  Don’t make the finances your sole responsibility, otherwise, you’re setting yourself up to be used.

Underestimating your Cub:  Just because he’s younger, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what time it is.  Younger guys these days are often very savvy – sexually and otherwise.  Stay away from anything referring to your age or his age, such as:  When I was younger; When I was your age, You’re too young to know this.  He knows there’s an age difference, there’s no need to keep reminding him.

Younger women are NOT your competition:   He’s with you because of your age, not despite your age.  You have many things to offer which women his age don’t:  knowledge, wisdom, life experience and no drama.  Acting younger to attract or keep a younger man is a turn off.  He expects you to be more mature and sophisticated.  If he wanted to be with someone younger, he would be.

Ignore those scornful stares:   Even though most of society is still against older women dating much younger men, it doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.  It means Cubs find you attractive and interesting – and that’s certainly nothing to be ashamed of.  Men have been dating much younger women for years.  It’s time we got rid of the double standard!
